It all started when Bev felt the urge to complete a volunteer activity before she started her new job. Being a take charge person, Bev began searching in the phone book and calling non profits to find out what opportunities might be available. By following the volunteer tab rabbit trail to the Ronald McDonald House, Bev, a Sioux Falls resident of thirty-four years, was able to connect with Sandy, Director of Operations and volunteers. Sandy assured her that the families at the Ronald McDonald House would LOVE and APPRECIATE her volunteer offer.
Sandy enthusiastically shared, “We always have opportunities to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House!” Bev jumped in with her first day of service cooking up a food extravaganza. A turkey had been waiting in the freezer for someone to cook, and this generous donation became a full meal with Bev’s help. In the pantry she was able to find cranberries, instant mashed potatoes and corn. The challenge to add gravy to the mix wasn’t going to be neglected by Bev either. With a combination of broth and cream of chicken soup, Bev was able to come up with wonderful gravy to smother over the turkey feast.
As the turkey simmered in the crock pot, Ronald McDonald House guests found their way to the kitchen. |
In Bev’s previous employment, she enjoyed working at a hospital where she always held a sense of helpfulness in the work she would do. In seeing the may sick adults and children daily, she found caring was the way to make a difference. She feels fortunate that whenever any of her three children needed to be hospitalized that she lived in a town where this kind of care was available. This is where by coming to the Ronald McDonald House Bev feels this sense of pride over the time she’s been able to volunteer.
